History

On May 28, 1969, representatives from several Knox, Indiana, businesses and organizations which had been giving scholarships to Knox Community Schools students met to begin formulating plans to form a scholarship foundation.  By the November 6, 1969, meeting the group began to broaden their scope to include organizations and businesses throughout Starke County so that students from the three county high schools could receive scholarships from the foundation.

During the meeting in November, the name of the foundation was established and attorney Orville Nichols was given the charge of drawing up incorporation papers for the Starke County Scholarship Foundation, Inc. as a not-for-profit entity.

The Foundation adopted by-laws on January 21, 1970, and elected officers.  The first officers to serve were President, J. Robert Fields; Vice-President, Melba Shilling; Secretary, Milton Beeman; and Treasurer, Mary Alice Roberts.

Since that date, The Starke County Scholarship Foundation has grown and has awarded hundreds of scholarships to students of Knox Community School Corporation, North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, Oregon-Davis School Corporation, and Culver Community School Corporation students living in North Bend Township.
